Lemont-Bromberek Combined School District 113A has secured a grant from CITGO aimed at enhancing STEM programming. The $50,000 grant will be used to integrate science, engineering, math, and technology into physical education classes and recess, providing new learning opportunities for students.
The funding will support the creation of an interactive playground at Old Quarry Middle School. This playground will feature digital stimulation that encourages health and wellness through activities designed to develop social-emotional, physical, and intellectual skills. Students will engage with a digital screen that offers interactive learning experiences.
In addition to the playground project, CITGO is sponsoring four teachers to attend the Citgo STEM Summit in Houston, Texas. At this national conference, they will present "Inquiry Based Approach to Incorporating STEM in Grades 4-8," which focuses on integrating Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math throughout the school day while promoting new technology use and career awareness among young learners.
“This is the fifth time we have received a grant through the STEM Talent Pipeline Program and we are proud to be a CITGO Innovation Academy,” said Dr. Daniela Fountain, Assistant Superintendent for Teaching & Learning. “We are always looking for ways to add more hands-on and personalized learning opportunities for our students, and these funds have been instrumental in providing engaging activities for our community.”
An upcoming event highlighting collaboration among Lemont school districts is scheduled for Thursday, November 7. STEM Night 2024 will occur at Lemont High School from 6-8 p.m., featuring sports-themed activities where students can explore the science behind their favorite games through experiments and challenges.
“There is science in everything, including movement and sports,” said Dr. Fountain. “STEM Night is a wonderful opportunity to bring our students together with high school students and families to engage in fun and meaningful learning experiences!”
